How can music be understood not only conceptually, but experienced through new context and unusual ways, and ultimately opened up to oneself in a new way? A necessary part of this is to overcome borders. At imPULS, the well-known such as Beethoven’s monumental Eroica and the unknown such as the theme of sleep are rethought in equal measure. The Flex Ensemble presents its approach to the works and themes. A multimedia concert performance<\/strong> The Flex Ensemble never sleeps. The four musicians have studied sleep research and the cultural history of sleep in order to develop a musical programme that reflects the phases of sleep. Bach, Skriabin, Pesson and Vasks, among others, are included. Even today, it is difficult to dispute his revolutionary compositional approach and influential musical work. This extraordinary programme offers three different ways to hear Beethoven’s Eroica. It does justice to the composer’s unconventional approach, honours him and places his music in a new political and contemporary context. Beginning with a newly composed work for the Flex Ensemble by Canadian composer Gordon Williamson based on the Eroica Symphony and inspired by Beethoven’s overtures, it is followed by Schoenberg’s melodrama “Ode to Napoleon” for piano quintet and a narrator, and finally the Eroica itself, arranged for piano quartet by Beethoven’s good friend and pupil Ferdinand Ries.<\/p>\n 23 February 2020<\/strong> 29 March 2020<\/strong> 13 November 2020<\/strong>
